Safe Sleep Guidelines
For your baby’s safety, we recommend the following practices:
- Remove all toys, cushions and decorative bedding when your baby is placed down to sleep
- Place babies to sleep on their back with their feet closest to the bottom end of the crib/cot
- Use only light, breathable blankets tucked into either side of the mattress below baby’s shoulder height
- Avoid using pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, loose bedding, or bumpers for babies under 12 months, as these may increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
- Be especially cautious with cot bumpers when your little one begins to roll and move, as babies can become entangled in bumper ties and excess fabrics, or use them to climb
Positioning Your Cot Safely
Ensure your cot is positioned safely by:
- Keeping it away from dangers like wall-hanging frames, mirrors, or shelves
- Avoiding heat sources such as radiators or direct sunlight
- Placing it away from furniture that could be used as footholds
- Keeping it clear of curtains or blinds with strings
- Using the base at the appropriate height and adjusting as your baby grows
Teething Considerations
Between 5 months and 3 years, babies may gnaw on their cot during teething:
- Baby’s saliva can soften wood material, potentially causing chunks to break off
- Consider using teething rails—protective pieces of silicone or fabric that run along the top edge of the cot’s sides
- These protective rails prevent damage to the cot and reduce safety hazards
